Jonathan, son of King Saul and a warrior himself (1 Samuel 14), became David's truest friend.
And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.— 1 Samuel 18:1 (KJV)
The Covenant
Jonathan made a covenant with David and gave him his robe, his garments, his sword, his bow and his girdle (1 Samuel 18:3–4).
The Arrows in the Field
When Saul resolved to kill David, Jonathan warned him with a signal of arrows shot past a lad in the field (1 Samuel 20:18–40).
And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.— 1 Samuel 20:42 (KJV)
Faithful After Death
Jonathan fell with Saul on Gilboa (1 Samuel 31:2). David lamented, "How are the mighty fallen" (2 Samuel 1:19, 25, 27), and later kept his oath by showing kindness to Jonathan's lame son Mephibosheth, who ate at the king's table (2 Samuel 9:1–13).
