Asahel was the youngest of Zeruiah's three sons, brother of Joab and Abishai, and the first name in the list of the Thirty (2 Samuel 23:24; 1 Chronicles 11:26).
And Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.— 2 Samuel 2:18 (KJV)
The Pursuit of Abner
After the battle at the pool of Gibeon, Asahel chased Abner, commander of the army of Ish-bosheth son of Saul, and "turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following" him (2 Samuel 2:19). Abner twice warned him to turn aside. Asahel refused, and Abner struck him with the butt of his spear and killed him (2 Samuel 2:21–23). The grief of his brothers runs on through 2 Samuel 3.
Honored in David's Army
1 Chronicles 27:7 lists Asahel as commander of the fourth month's division, with his son Zebadiah after him. His name stands at the head of the Thirty.
What Asahel Teaches Young Men
